Heading to HPE Discover in London!

October 12, 2016

This content is 2 years old. Please, read this page keeping its age in your mind.
I have been graciously invited by Calvin Zito (a.k.a. the HPEStorageGuy) to join the HPE Discover conference in London. HPE Discover will take place from 29-Nov-16 to 1-Dec-16 .

Those who know me a bit better may ask “Why HPE?” and “Is there anything really exciting going on there?”

I’m going to HPE Discover with an open mind and with curiosity. I’ve done most of my past system administrator career working with HPE servers and I have of course fond memories of the various ProLiant systems, however my shift towards presales/consulting (bound to work with HP competitors), and now into IT operations management (in a non HPE shop) have estranged me from the HP world (hard to say HPE, heh… heritage).

Composable Goodness

This lack of proximity led me to mistakenly think that HPE was not really innovating, especially with a late entry in the HCI (Hyper-Converged Infrastructure) world. That was it, until some of my fellow Tech Field Day acquaintances (whom I will gladly name if they agree to) told me that I should have at look at their Composable Infrastructure concept, called Synergy.
I recall one of them telling something in the lines of “Composable Infrastructure is where the industry is headed”. That’s a bold statement, and coming from an individual of such caliber bold enough to have me interested. This had me very intrigued and doing my research on that topic also led me to discover that they are building this architecture for a long term usage, with the aim to integrate silicon photonics compatible systems in the future.

Max’s Opinion

It’s a surprise to no one in this industry that hardware has become commodity. With this new architecture, HPE can leverage their experience as a hardware builder while proposing a product that seems promising and versatile enough to satisfy a wide variety of requirements.

It would be interesting to see how their “Composer” module and the software counterpart manage these new bits of hardware into an enterprise-class solution that can accommodate not only traditional workloads, but also orchestrate automated deployments based on an application lifecycle, all apparently software/script controlled. Besides potentially better margins on hardware sales, gains can be expected on the software aspects as well. In any case, I’m yet to get to know this platform better.

What do you think about Composable Infrastructure? How does it fits in the data center landscape?

Disclosure
